Puffs of a gendered sort

(side note: don't get busted taking pictures of shower puffs at CVS, it's very tough to explain yourself!)

Here are the puffs in their "natural" habitat...the pufferload if you will.

And if you look down the aisle, and keep going until you've reached the absolute end, you will find some...

"Manly Puffs" (word to the wise...mildew assessment potentials?)

Axe...because apparently, the stuff wasn't masculine enough. they needed to adorn the display with a few black puffs (a la Christmas Tree ornament) and oh, there's something called "Axe Blade" oooohhhh what will they think of next?

...cough, cough

Paulo Freire. Pedagogy of the Oppressed. 5-23.

Desription:
• The contradiction between the oppressors and the oppressed is imbedded
in both of their lives to the extent where revolution is misconstrued and
feared by the oppressed


Analysis:
• Because this contradiction is ingrained in their lives the oppressed
have a tendency to become oppressors themselves – their model of humanity
(7)
• Fear of greater oppression prohibits a revolution by the oppressed (8)
• Oppressed suffer from a duality where they yearn for and fear freedom (8)
• Once the oppressed attain freedom, the oppressors now feel like the
oppressed – unending contradiction (15)
• For the oppressors "to be is to have" and with this mentality any
generosity shown is false (16)
• The influence of this contradiction fools the oppressed into thinking
that this way of life is a divine plan (18)
• Dependence leads the oppressed to destroy their own life and lives of
fellow oppressed (20)


Vision:
• The contradiction between the oppressed and oppressors will be destroyed
and both will live equally, having achieved freedom


Strategy:
• The oppressed need be the ones to rid of the contradiction – oppressor
is unable (8)
• The desire for freedom must be shared by all of the oppressed – a
pedagogy must be created with the oppressed (8-9)
• Love can be achieved through rebellion (14)
• Oppressors must commit themselves to be the oppressed where constant
reexamination is required – drastic change (17)
• Reflection is imperative – leads to action – leads to freedom (21)

Class Notes 4/2/07 Group work (Ragonese, "Riot Grrrls Castrate 'Cock Rock' in New York")


Argument:
  • "Feminist punk-rock dyke activist/aspiring academic separatist riot grrrls" want to see more female rock artists being played on the air (92.3 K Rock in particular)
  • On one popular rock station in NYC (K Rock), 99.12% of music played is by male artists.
  • Feminist protesters argued that in addition to females being discriminated against on the air, wmoen were also being degraded on the rock stations talk shows( ie: Howard Stern Morning Show)
Audience Targeted:
  • Protesters are targeting women who are not equally represented on the popular rock stations.
  • Also targeting all groups who experience inequality in the music industry.
Structure/Discourse:
  • All aspects of radio station (music playlists, DJ's talk shows) were sending misogynist, anti-feminist/anti-women messages to listeners.
    • DJ's were all males with exception of one.
    • DJ's mocked feminist protesters; calling them names, etc.
    • Howard Stern Show- show's content is degrading to women.
